The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of
Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events
relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental
Protection Act.
UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Mary's Harbour Crab Processing Facility
Proponent: Labrador Fishermen's Union Shrimp Company Limited (LFUSC)
(Reg. 1508)
The proponent proposes to construct a state-of-the-art
crab processing facility in Mary's Harbour on the south coast of
Labrador. The facility will be located adjacent to the government wharf
on the south and the community road to town centre in the east. To
accommodate the pre-engineered steel building, a total of 450 square
metres of harbour will be in-filled with blasted rock. The facility will
have the capability of processing live snow crab into either cooked or
raw sections, with processing taking place for approximately six months
annually, May to October. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin
this summer/fall.
The undertaking was registered on June 3, 2010; the
deadline for public comments is July 13, 2010; and the minister's
decision is due by July 18, 2010.
Placentia Junction Cottage Development Plan Amendment

The Land Management Division of the Department of
Environment and Conservation proposes to amend the Placentia Junction
Cottage Development Plan to provide for a new, 26-lot cottage
development area at Little Ship Harbour Pond and Hill Pond. The
Placentia Junction Cottage Development Plan was originally approved in
August 2004. All lots that are developed will be available through a
public draw process. Little Ship Harbour Pond and Hill pond are located
off the Long Harbour Road (Route 101) approximately 5.5 km north of the
Argentia Access Road (Route 100) and approximately 9.7 km south of the
Long Harbour Access Road (Route 202). The total land area to be
developed for cottages is approximately 10.4 hectares and will include a
1.8 km road. Construction of the cottage lots will be undertaken by
individual owners once allocation has been completed.
The undertaking was registered on June 8, 2010; public
comments are due by July 13, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by
July 22, 2010.
FINAL GUIDELINES ISSUED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
STATEMENT (EIS):
Salmonier Pond Access Road and Atlantic Salmon Nursery
Proponent: Gray Aqua Group Limited

The minister has issued the final guidelines, dated on
June 8, 2010, for the preparation of the environmental impact statement
(EIS) for the proposed Salmonier Pond Access Road and Atlantic Salmon
Nursery. The EIS guidelines provide direction to the proponent and
identify the information that will be required in the EIS including the
project description, a description of the present environment, potential
environmental effects, proposed mitigation measures and a statement of
residual effects of the project on the environment.
The final EIS guidelines, along with more information
on the project, are available (registration #1439) on the department's
website at www.gov.nl.ca/env.
