Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Forest District 2 - Five Year Operating Plan Amendment (2007-2011)
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Forest Service                                           (Reg. 1505)

The proponent proposes to amend the Crown Five Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 2 to allow an alternate 3 kilometre access road to Harvest Block 234 and an adjacent 240 hectares of timber to the east. Harvest Block 234 is approximately 6 kilometres south of the Town of Lethbridge. The alternate 3 kilometre route will eliminate the need for the previously approved 2 kilometre access road as well as the associated reconstruction of an existing 4.7 kilometre road. The alternate road will not cross any streams and will eliminate the need for the two stream crossings that would be required for the construction of the originally planed 2 kilometre road and the associated reconstruction of the 4.7 kilometre road. The alternate road will also be used to remedially harvest an additional 13,400 cubic metres (m3) of timber on 240 hectares of forested land north of Big Pond that has been hygraded for sawlogs. The additional 13,400 m3 of harvest will be balanced by reductions elsewhere in the district.

The undertaking was registered on May 25, 2010; public comments are due by June 30, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by July 9, 2010.
