Proponent: ICUS

The proponent proposes to establish a microbial fermentation facility in a new 10,000 square foot steel prefabricated warehouse building to be constructed adjacent to 14 Clyde Avenue in Donovan's Industrial Park, Mount Pearl. The facility will produce microbials (microorganisms) that are used in agriculture as inoculants for increasing crop yields, and as bio-control agents for increasing plant health and reducing disease. The production process involves growing the organisms in seed vessels, transferring to a production vessel and drying, formulating and packaging. The facility will produce up to 1,500 kilograms of dry material in the first year of production and up to 10,000 kilograms at maximum capacity. The facility will produce products for export to the US and mainland Canada.

The undertaking was registered on May 18, 2010; public comments are due by June 24, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by July 2, 2010.

Construction is scheduled over two to five year period with development of a four hectare cranberry field by 2011.
Construction will include removal of vegetation, ditching installation of irrigation and sediment pond, berms, bed drainage tile, water control structures and construction of an access road. Sand, fertilizers and pesticides will be applied to the cranberry beds during operation. Harvesting of the cranberries includes flooding each field, in succession, with approximately 45 centimetres of water and removal with a cranberry beater. The project is scheduled to commence in 2010, subject to approval.
