Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Ironstone River Labrador Aggregate Quarry
Proponent: North Links Construction Company Ltd.                                                 (Reg.1495)

The proponent proposes to develop a 9.5 hectare aggregate quarry (block A 4.6 ha, block B 4.9 ha) located east of Ironstone River, Labrador West. Access to the site will be through the existing access road to an adjacent quarry. Onsite equipment may include a portable crusher, washer, screening plant, control room trailer and parts trailer. The operation will consist of drilling and blasting, crushing, screening and possibly washing of aggregate with the purpose of supplying the local concrete/asphalt and aggregate market. The anticipated operational period would run from May until November, subject to approval.

The undertaking was registered on May 4, 2010; the deadline for public comments is June 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by June 18, 2010.

Clarenville Breakwater and Marina Upgrades
Proponent: Clarenville Yacht Club Inc.                                                                     (Reg.1496)

The proponent proposes to construct a permanent 122 metre rock fill breakwater in the waters of Dark Hole, Clarenville. Access to the proposed breakwater will be achieved by infilling the shoreline from the end of the existing marina parking lot. The endpoint for the breakwater will be determined as part of detailed engineering design, which will include a sounding program to support the selection of the most economical and technically viable solution. In addition to the breakwater, the proponent is proposing to reconfigure the existing marina. Construction is scheduled to start between September 1 and November 1, 2010 and last for approximately three weeks, subject to approval.

The undertaking was registered on May 7, 2010; public comments are due by June 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by June 21, 2010.

Red Indian Lake Cabin Development, Millertown
Proponent: Floyd Verge                                                                                         (Reg. 1497)

The proposal is to construct a cottage development area near Red Indian Lake in central Newfoundland. The proposed development area is approximately 16 hectares in size, which will be divided into 40-50 cottage lots. The project will be completed in phases, with 3-4 cottages being constructed in 2010. A 1.3 kilometre road will be constructed and a new 500 metre section of power line will be required.  Road construction is anticipated to begin in July 2010 and construction of cottages and associated power line will commence in August 2010, subject to approval.

The undertaking was registered on May 7, 2010; public comments are due by June 15, 2010; and, the minister's decision is due by June 21, 2010.

George's Brook Residential Subdivision
Proponent: Manuel Ellis                                                                                          (Reg. 1498)

The proponent proposes to develop a 20-30 lot residential subdivision on a 17.5 hectare site in the Town of George's Brook, Smith Sound, Trinity Bay. The planned new homes will range in size from 1,100 to 1,300 square feet in size. Construction will include site excavation and preparation including installation of water lines and septic tanks. Construction of the subdivision is proposed to start as early as August 2010 and will take place over two years, subject to approval.

The undertaking was registered on May 7, 2010; public comments are due by June 15, 2010; and, the minister's decision is due by June 21, 2010.

Tommy's Pond ATV Trail
Proponent: Randy Adams                                                                                      (Reg. 1499)

The proposal is to develop an access trail to remote cabins one kilometre east of Tavenor's Pit, near Thorburn Lake. Construction will require minimal vegetation clearing or trail preparation due to the nature of the sparsely vegetated terrain. Corduroy methods will be used to cross the marshland along the route. Construction is proposed to commence immediately, subject to approval.

The undertaking was registered on May 11, 2010; public comments are due by June 15, 2010; and, the minister's decision is due by June 25, 2010.
