Celebration Planned for National Wildlife Week 2010

The value of biodiversity and the role each individual needs to play in conserving and protecting the value of life on earth is the focus of National Wildlife Week 2010, celebrated April 4-10. The week complements the declaration of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations.

"Biodiversity includes all life on earth, much of which we depend upon for survival," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "From the medicine that heals us to the food we eat, we rely on biodiversity in ways we don't always recognize. Many of our actions threaten biodiversity on a daily basis, so I encourage everyone to make at least one positive change that will, in turn, have a positive effect on life as we know it."

The public are invited to join staff of the wildlife division of the Department of Environment and Conservation and partnering organizations at the Corner Brook Plaza from April 6-9 and the Village Mall, St. John's, from April 7-10 to view exhibits and participate in contests. Visitors to the Village Mall will also have an opportunity to view a live peregrine falcon at 2:00 p.m. both Thursday, April 8, and Saturday, April 10. Winners of the department's annual Wild About Art contest, which was launched throughout the provincial school districts, will also be announced at the Village Mall on Saturday.

"National Wildlife Week is one opportunity for us to celebrate biodiversity this year," said Minister Johnson. "The activities of the week will play a role in helping create a true sense of stewardship and help maintain our focus on diversity in the province."
