Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Peter's Pond, Botwood Quarry
Proponent: Humber Valley Aggregates & Asphalt Ltd.                       (Reg. 1478)

The proponent proposes to develop a five hectare aggregate quarry, located approximately 500 metres west of Route 350 (near Botwood). Access to the site is via an existing road. No construction is required prior to commencement of operations. A portable crusher will be utilized on site and there may be portable trailer(s) as required for spare parts, office and control, etc. The operation will consist of excavating, crushing and screening of aggregate for the purpose of supplying the local cement/aggregate market. This project will be weather dependent, with crushing scheduled to begin immediately following spring thaw. The operation will be conducted between May and November 2010. All work is anticipated be completed within five weeks.

The undertaking was registered on March 4, 2010; the deadline for public comments is April 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by April 18, 2010.

Poole Cove, Harbour Breton Aquaculture Wharf and Access Road
Proponent: Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Reg. 1479)

The proponent proposes to construct a pressure treated timber crib wharf with a concrete deck at Poole Cove, Harbour Breton. The undertaking will also include a 2.4 kilometre gravel access road and parallel single phase electric power line from the wharf to Spencer's Brook Road in Harbour Breton. A 62 metre by 40 metre fenced feed storage area and attendant building will be built at the wharf site. The undertaking is in support of the aquaculture industry in the Harbour Breton area. If approved, construction is due to begin in May 2010.

The undertaking was registered on March 9, 2010; public comments are due by April 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by April 23, 2010.

Baie Verte, Stog'er Tight Goldmine
Proponent: Tenacity Gold Mining Company Ltd.                                   (Reg. 1480)

The site of the proposed undertaking is located approximately two kilometres southwest of Ming's Bight near Baie Verte, north-central Newfoundland. The proponent proposes to open pit mine the 93,000 tonnes of mineable ore reserves over a four month period starting in mid-June 2010. All ore will be trucked to the Nugget Pond gold mill facility near Snook's Arm for processing. If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in early June, 2010. Open pit mining operations will start immediately after completion of construction around mid-June 2010.

The undertaking was registered on March 10, 2010; public comments are due by April 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by April 24, 2010.

Baie Verte, Deer Cove Gold Mine
Proponent: Tenacity Gold Mining Company Ltd.                        (Reg. 1481)

The site of the proposed undertaking is located approximately 4.2 kilometres north of Ming's Bight near Baie Verte, north-central Newfoundland. The proponent proposes to mine 7,600 tonnes of ore reserves from a currently accessible section of the Deer Cove gold-quartz vein. All mined ore, in addition to 4,275 tonnes of low-grade stockpile, will be trucked to the Nugget Pond gold mill facility near Snook's Arm for processing. If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in early June 2010. Mining operations will begin immediately following completion of construction; approximately early-July 2010.

The undertaking was registered on March 10, 2010; public comments are due by April 15, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by April 24, 2010.
