Alternate Energy Source to Fuel Labrador Hunting and Fishing Lodge

Flowers River Lodge has received support of $37,500 from the Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund to assist with the installation of a combined solar and wind power generating and storage system for the hunting and fishing lodge located in northern Labrador.

"Our government continues to support and encourage individuals, businesses and communities to find ways to reduce green house gas emissions and lead by example," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "An alternate energy system like this one which generates and stores electricity is certainly a green approach to fuel consumption for this business."

Currently powered by a diesel generator, the combined fuel consumption for the lodge and floatplane, which is required to deliver the fuel, produces approximately 52 tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) annually. The installation of a wind power energy system will permit the lodge to produce enough electricity to meet its energy requirements and, at the same time, reduce the current GHG emissions by 95 per cent.

"I am pleased that the environmentally conscious efforts of this Labrador hunting and fishing lodge will be supported through the Green Fund," said the Honourable John Hickey, MHA for Lake Melville. "Because of its geographic location and many years of operation, this lodge is renowned for fly fishing and caribou hunting – it can now also showcase its clean energy solution."

"This project fits our aim of lessening our environmental impact and creating economic efficiencies within our business," said Jim Burton, President of Flowers River Lodge. "This system has been designed to satisfy the electrical requirements for the location year round, if required, and eliminate the use of a diesel generator that has been used for more than 35 years. I am grateful to be receiving government support to help put this system in place."
