The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of
Environment and Conservation, has announced the
following event relative to Part 10 Environmental
Assessment of the
Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:
Jewer's Brook, Wooddale, Cranberry and Forage Operation
Proponent: Glenfair Farms Ltd.
(Reg. 1474)
The proposal is to develop a cranberry farm on an 88
hectare peat bog. The site is located in the Wooddale
north area, approximately five kilometres northeast of
Jewer’s Brook and 11 kilometres from Newbay Road.
Construction is scheduled over two to five years with a
four hectare cranberry bog and four hectare forage field
developed each year. Construction will include removal
of vegetation, ditching installation of irrigation and
sediment ponds, berms, bed drainage tile, water control
structures and farm auxiliary buildings. Sand,
fertilizers and pesticides will be applied to the
cranberry beds during operation. Harvesting of the
cranberries includes flooding each field, in succession,
with approximately 45 centimetres of water and removal
with a cranberry beater. Forage field area will require
drainage. The project is scheduled to commence in 2010,
if approved.
The undertaking was registered on February 3, 2010; the
deadline for public comments is March 17, 2010; and the
minister's decision is due by March 20, 2010.
