Three Burin Peninsula Schools See Improvements

With an investment of approximately $2.2 million, three schools in Burin-Placentia West are receiving upgrades Marystown Central High and Sacred Heart Academy in Marystown, and Donald C. Jamieson Academy in Salt Pond.

"These are just three of the many projects currently underway in schools throughout the province," said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education. "With the massive investments were making in infrastructure repair and maintenance, we are transforming our school system into one that provides quality learning environments for teachers and students alike."

Marystown Central High and Donald C. Jamieson Academy have received window replacements, while a window and siding replacement project is in progress for Sacred Heart Academy, with an anticipated completion date of September 2011.

"We have a commitment to provide a safe, secure environment for the children and youth of our province," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin-Placentia West. "This is an example of such efforts in the Burin-Placentia West area."

Minister King said that since 2004, approximately 250 building envelope repairs which include window replacements have been completed or approved at a cost of $39 million.

"In fact, over the past six years, 1,400 school construction, maintenance, repair, extension and redevelopment projects have been undertaken for a total commitment of $450 million," said Minister King. "These investments are having a real impact on the state of our schools, and we will continue on this course to improve and strengthen all aspects of our education system."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments For Our Children and Our Future provides $113.5 million in funding for K-12 infrastructure throughout the province. This includes funding for new schools, roofing projects, window and siding replacements, electrical system upgrades, enhanced accessibility and renovated skilled trades suites.
