Millions Invested in Mount Pearl Schools
With approximately $3.5 million allocated by
the Provincial Government, four schools in Mount Pearl are undergoing a
series of upgrades.
"Mount Pearl is a popular place for young
families to live and we are making major investments in the area to
ensure schools are modern and sound," said the Honourable Darin King,
Minister of Education. "These projects will create better learning
environments for students and teachers and ensure the sustainability of
the facilities for future generations."
In addition to the extension and renovation to
St. Peters, which were completed at a cost of $1.4 million, the school
also has a new roof. Its feeder school, St. Peters Elementary, received
an envelop retrofit and window replacement valued at $650,000. As well,
an extensive roofing project has been completed at Mount Pearl Senior
High which also received some new siding a $637,000 project in total.
Finally, some window and door replacements and an electrical upgrade are
planned for Mary Queen of the World.
"The improvements and upgrades at these
schools in Mount Pearl will create a safe and healthy learning
environment for our children," said the
Honourable Dave Denine, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and
Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector, and MHA
for Mount Pearl South. "I am delighted that
our government is committed to improving school infrastructure, as
quality education is a top priority."
"I am thrilled with these significant
investments in our schools in Mount Pearl," said Steve Kent, MHA for
Mount Pearl North. "This is another testament to our governments
continued commitment to our children and essentially to the future of
our province. Students need the best resources to succeed. They also
need a healthy and safe environment to do that. These latest school
infrastructure investments are appreciated by our residents."
Minister King noted that the Provincial
Governments investments in infrastructure this year are seven times the
investments made in 2004-05 at $113.5 million compared to $14.7 million
six years ago.
"Infrastructure is a major portion of the $1.3
billion allocated for education this year," said Minister King. "Years
of limited spending meant we had a great deal of catch-up to do. But
were making great progress. Over the past six years, approximately
1,400 infrastructure projects have been undertaken in our provinces
schools an incredible number given that we have only 272 schools in
the province. We are determined to make all our schools quality places
to learn."
