Education Minister Announces Province's Newest Scholars

Over $200,000 in scholarships have been awarded to approximately 200 recent high school graduates across Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, announced the recipients of the Provincial Government scholarships today.

"We are pleased to be able to provide this funding to assist these students as they move on to post-secondary education," said Minister King. "Being awarded these scholarships is a clear indication of the importance each of them places on education, and I am confident each will find success in their chosen careers."

Recipients of the Junior Jubilee, Electoral District and Centenary of Responsible Government Scholarships are chosen based on public examination results. The Junior Jubilee Scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded to the student who attains the highest overall score in public exams. This year's recipient is David Browne, a graduate of Holy Heart of Mary in St. John's.

Electoral District Scholarships are worth $1,000 and are awarded to three high school graduates in each district who achieved the highest public exam marks. Another 55 students have received the Centenary of Responsible Government Scholarship, which is also valued at $1,000.

The Constable W.C. Moss Scholarship is awarded to the son or daughter of a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (active, retired, or deceased) who, other than the Junior Jubilee winner, achieved the highest public exam mark. This year's recipient of the $1,000 scholarship is Matthew Tilley, a graduate of Corner Brook Regional High.

"The Williams Government believes in education, as evidenced by the $1.3 billion allocated this year," said Minister King. "We are also big believers in reducing student debt. With low tuition, up-front, needs-based grants, and interest-free loans, students in Newfoundland and Labrador are getting an affordable, high-quality post-secondary education. I offer my sincere congratulations to each of these students and best wishes for continued success in the future."
