Education
August 18, 2010Improvements Planned for Three Avalon Peninsula
Schools
With an investment of almost $1.5 million, plans are underway for
three schools on the Avalon Peninsula to have exterior upgrades
completed — part of approximately 150 maintenance projects underway or
in the planning process throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the huge number of infrastructure
projects we have on the books," said the Honourable Darin King, Minister
of Education. "From one side of the province to the other, schools large
and small are getting upgrades and repairs that are improving learning
environments and keeping our students safe."
The projects include a full roof replacement and some siding repairs
for Dunne Memorial Academy, St. Mary's. Extensive building envelop
upgrades, including full roof and siding replacements, are planned for
St. Anne's Academy, Dunville. Stella Maris Academy in Trepassey will
receive some window repairs and a full roof replacement.
"I am pleased to see our government continue to invest in our school
infrastructure, particularly in our rural communities," said Keith
Hutchings, MHA for Ferryland. "The Stella Maris Academy upgrades will
allow the much needed enhancements to be completed, ensuring the
building continues to service the students and communities on the
Southern Avalon."
The Honourable Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia-St. Mary's, said he
is extremely pleased with these announcements. "St. Anne's in Dunville
will take on an increased role this September with the addition of the
elementary students from Placentia, and will become the sole elementary
school in the region. This, of course, is in addition to a new state of
the art Laval High School in Placentia, which is nearing completion to
commence classes in September."
Budget 2010:
The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our
Future
provides $113.5 million in funding for K-12 infrastructure
throughout the province, a component of the Provincial Government's
overall infrastructure strategy which
includes investments in municipalities, healthcare, transportation,
justice, social housing, transportation, and the environment.
"It's important to keep in mind that we only have 279 schools and
just under 70,000 students in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister
King. "That means we are investing $12,220 per student — a 65 per cent
increase since 2003. This helps ensure our students are getting the
highest quality education that will prepare them for success at
post-secondary and beyond."
