The facility was upgraded with new shingles, windows
and brick as well as improvements to the emergency exits. The interior
of the building was also upgraded with new gyproc, plaster and paint,
new flooring, shelving and a modern circulation desk. The electrical
system was also upgraded and the layout of the library has been
enhanced.
Mr. Taylor expressed his satisfaction with the repairs
and improvements to the library. "Anytime we can improve a library
facility, it is beneficial for us," said Mr. Taylor. "We know that
people want modern, inviting and spacious libraries and we are working
to improve our facilities across the province. It is rewarding to see
the results of those efforts and we are certain patrons of the library
here in Grand Bank will appreciate them too."
"On behalf of the council, staff and residents of the
town of Grand Bank, I want to thank the Provincial Government and
Minister King for the tremendous financial contribution made in
upgrading and repairing the public library here in the town," said Mayor
Lafosse. "We are delighted that all work is now complete and that
residents can once again avail of its services in our community."
In addition to the Grand Bank Library, the
newly-renovated Kindale Library in Stephenville was also opened this
year. Both were identified as priorities for infrastructure improvements
through the PILRB facilities review conducted in 2008.
Over the past five years, the Provincial Government
has provided additional annual funding of almost $2.5 million, plus
one-time funding of $1.25 million, for provincial public libraries. This
includes funding for infrastructure improvements, development of the
early literacy program, increased operating hours at 47 libraries,
salaries, and training for volunteer library board trustees and staff.
There are currently 96 public libraries in
Newfoundland and Labrador, with 86 per cent of the population having
direct access.
