Minister Announces Post-Secondary Scholarship Winners

For the third year in a row, dozens of students will receive help with their tuition through the Provincial Government's Successful Post-Secondary Transition Scholarship program.

"I offer my sincere congratulations to each of these individuals, not only for receiving these scholarships, but for making the decision to further their education and training," said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education. "With an educated population, we can look forward to successful, thriving communities that form the foundation of a strong, prosperous province."

Forty-six adult learners will each receive a $2,000 scholarship through the program, which is funded by the Provincial Government as well as through the Labour Market Agreement. The scholarship is open to permanent residents of the province who have graduated since 2007-08 from Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED) or the Comprehensive Arts and Science (CAS) College Transition program. To be eligible, individuals must also be enrolled in their first-year of a full-time program of studies in a public or private post-secondary institution leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.

In keeping with the Provincial Government's commitment to raise provincial literacy skill levels, approximately $31 million has been invested in literacy since 2004. This includes $6.5 million annually for ABE and literacy programming; $650,000 to expand College of the North Atlantic's Comprehensive Arts and Sciences program; and an additional $1.1 million over the past three years for public libraries. As well, as announced in Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future, a new strategic adult literacy plan will be launched in 2010-11 through an allocation of $2.3 million this year through the Labour Market Agreement.

Minister King also noted that an ABE e-learning pilot is currently underway. Learners are provided with a laptop and software to complete ABE Level I at home. An instructor is online and learners are assigned a mentor from within their community. There are currently two communities engaged in the pilot, with plans to expand to an additional two for the 2010-11 school year.

"We have frozen tuition that is already among the lowest in the country and we have implemented significant measures to alleviate the burden of student debt," said Minister King. "This scholarship provides another level of support to help students access post-secondary education. I am pleased we are able to assist these students, and I offer my best wishes to all of them as they continue on their educational path."
