The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland Labrador Housing:

New Windows and Doors for Gander Units

New windows, doors, roofing and exterior painting are included in a package of renovations being carried out on 24 Newfoundland Labrador Housing (Housing) residences in Gander. Housing awarded the $247,000 contract to J & J Enterprises. The Honourable Tom Marshall, acting Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Housing made the announcement today.

These upgrades in Gander are among many modernization and improvements projects being carried out by Housing in communities throughout the province, said Minister Marshall. These projects are aimed at making renovations and energy-saving upgrades to improve and maintain existing social housing, and in the process to create jobs and strengthen local economies.

The renovations are being completed on social housing properties on Rickenbacker Road and Gordon Street. The anticipated completion date for this project is early 2010.

The homes that are being upgraded are crucial accommodations to low-income families living in Gander, said the Honourable Kevin OBrien, MHA for Gander. It is great to see this project on Housings priority list, as I know it means so much to the tenants who will now have more comfortable and energy-efficient units.

These current upgrades and repairs are part of Housings annual modernization and improvement program. As part of Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, the Provincial Government will invest $14.55 million for building, renovating and retro-fitting social housing infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

This work is in keeping with the goals of the Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador Secure Foundations, which outlines a new long-term vision for social housing aimed at improving the housing circumstances of lower-income households and helping to create healthier communities.

Recently, the Federal and Provincial Governments announced a joint investment of $93 million to build new and renovate existing affordable housing throughout the province over the next two years. Overall, the provincial contribution is $50 million, with the Federal Government contributing a further $43 million.
