Government Seeks Designs for New Placentia Bridge
The Williams Government has issued a
Request for Expressions of Interest for a consultant to
design a new vertical lift bridge to replace the Sir
Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge on Route 100 in Placentia. The
existing bridge was built in 1961 as a link between the
communities of Placentia and Jerseyside.
"The Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge has
served the Placentia area well over the last five
decades, but the structure is nearing the end of its
life-span," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister
of Transportation and Works. "The bridge not only serves
as a vital link for residents in the area, but is
important for the navigation of a fleet of vessels that
use Placentia Bay. Our government is taking a proactive
approach and replacing the structure before its
deterioration impacts public safety."
The design for the new bridge is
expected to be similar to the existing structure − 90
metres in length with a lift span of 30 metres, with a
lane in each direction and sidewalks on both sides.
"I am very pleased with the diligence
with which government has pursued this project," said
PlacentiaSt. Marys MHA Felix Collins. "The eventual
replacement of the lift bridge in Placentia is welcome
news to the area and will enhance motoring conditions
for residents and visitors to the area. Calling for
designs of a new bridge is yet another example of the
tremendous enhancements government is making in the
Placentia area."
Expressions of Interest are
anticipated to be received by the end of this month, and
site work is expected to begin in the fall of 2010.
As part of Budget 2009, the Williams
Government is investing over $300 million in
transportation infrastructure. The Provincial
Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more
than $4 billion over the next several years.
