The Williams Government is
accelerating its commitment to revitalize the Trans
Labrador Highway (TLH) by issuing a tender to lay
asphalt on an additional 50 kilometre section of Phase I
from Happy Valley-Goose Bay towards Churchill Falls.
Rather than wait until next year to award the contract,
the Provincial Government is getting ready now to award
this further work.
Paving of approximately 30 kilometres
of Phase I of the TLH has already started. In addition,
a tender to upgrade and widen approximately 80
kilometres of Phase I, from Happy Valley-Goose Bay
towards Churchill Falls was recently issued, which will
be cost-shared with the Federal Government under the
Building Canada Fund.
"We realize the importance of the TLH
to people across Labrador," said the Honourable Trevor
Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "There is
no doubt that this government is fulfilling its
commitment to Labradorians by stepping up its aggressive
schedule of hard-top and upgrading work on the Trans
Labrador Highway."
"This accelerated work on the Trans
Labrador Highway is an excellent example of this
governments effort to realize its long-term vision for
Labrador," said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister
Labrador Affairs. "Through our Northern Strategic Plan
we continue to work hard to develop an integrated
transportation system responsive to the needs of all
Labradorians. This aggressive push to complete the Trans
Labrador Highway will help to make that goal a reality."
This year, the Provincial Government
will invest over $60 million (cost-shared) to widen 130
kilometres and begin to lay asphalt on 160 kilometres of
Phase I. Additionally, the Provincial Government will
invest $32.5 million to complete construction of Phase
III.
As part of Budget 2009, the Williams
Government is investing over $300 million in
transportation infrastructure. The Provincial
Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more
than $4 billion over the next several years.
