Province Continues to Roll Out Pavement

The 2009-10 Provincial Roads Improvement Program continues with road work in the Bay of Islands and Humber East areas. The projects are part of the $70.7 million worth of road upgrades taking place throughout the province this construction season.

"This government is committed to revitalizing our entire transportation network," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "Construction crews have been working non-stop since April, as soon as the first tender under this years roads program was awarded."

The following projects have been tendered:

  • Approximately 4.5 kilometres of Route 440, from Meadows towards Gilliams will be paved; as well, approximately 1.1 kilometres at McIvers will be pulverized and paved;
  • On Route 450, approximately five kilometres in York Harbour will be paved and approximately one kilometre in Johns Beach will be pulverized and paved (cost-shared with the Federal Government); and,
  • Thistle Drive in Steady Brook will also be paved.
  • "I am pleased with the ongoing highway upgrades of both sides of my district," said Bay of Islands MHA Terry Loder. "The work tendered again confirms our governments commitment to providing safe highways for residents to use on a daily basis, while attracting further economic and tourism development in our area."

    "Thistle Drive in Steady Brook, which passes along the front of the Marble Mountain Ski area, is a busy road and extremely important for tourism," said the Honourable Tom Marshall, MHA for Humber East. "I welcome the funding announcement to pave this road which will benefit both area residents and visitors to the ski resort."

    The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $4 billion over the next several years.
