Peterview Celebrates New Affordable Housing

The Government of Canada, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Municipality of Peterview today celebrated the opening of ten new affordable rental units. The Quiet Corners Housing Complex is supported by more than $1 million in funding under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Affordable Housing Program, which is equally cost-shared 50/50, between both levels of government.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); and Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits, on behalf of the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland Labrador Housing, made the announcement today.

"The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada for those who need it most," said Minister MacKay. "The Quiet Corners Housing Complex is helping low-income seniors and individuals with special needs access safe and suitable housing, and build a stronger future for themselves."

"One of the key mandates of the Williams Government is to increase housing options throughout the province for people with low or fixed incomes," said Mr. Forsey. "To that end we are pleased to provide $500,000 to the Quiet Corners Housing Complex. Our investment will ensure affordable housing is available to the people of our province into the future."

Quiet Corners Housing Complex consists of ten, one-bedroom units, one of which is fully accessible. The project is sponsored by Your Strength is Our Strength Club Inc. and received $1,024,542 million under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Affordable Housing Program and $10,000 in seed funding during the initial planning stages.

"This is an exciting day for all of the residents of Peterview," said Annie Pope, Chief Executive Officer, Your Strength is Our Strength Club Inc. "In addition to the amazing work of the developers and the contractors, and all the bricks and mortar that have built this complex, this has also truly been a work of the heart. So many people in our community have contributed to its completion in one way or another, and we are all just thrilled and very proud to watch it become a reality."

Recently, the Federal and Provincial governments announced a joint investment of $93 million to build new and renovate existing affordable housing across the province over the next two years. Overall, the provincial contribution is $50 million, and the federal government is contributing a further $43 million.

As part of Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, the Provincial Government will invest $14.55 million for building, renovating and retro-fitting social housing infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Last fall, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canadas Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

CMHC has been Canadas national housing agency for more than 60 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, affordable homes and making vibrant and sustainable communities and cities a reality across the country.
