Better bridges are beckoning to Bonavista North and
new culverts are around the corner for the District of Placentia-St.
Marys, thanks to the 2009-10 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.
The Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of
Transportation and Works, announced today the Deadmans Bay North and
Deadmans Bay South bridges in the Bonavista North District will be
replaced and that culverts will be replaced at various locations on
Southern Shore Highway, Salmonier Line, Route 91 (Old Placentia
Highway), Route 93-10 (Mitchells Brook Road), Cape Shore Highway, and
Southeast Placentia Road. Replacement of the Deadmans Bay South bridge
will be cost-shared 50-50 with the Federal Government.
"We are making considerable progress on the Provincial
Roads Improvement Program so far this year and Im sure motorists will
experience a better driving experience as a result of these upgrades,"
said Minister Taylor. "This year we are paying particular attention to
our bridge infrastructure and the Deadmans Bay bridges were top
priorities."
"I am very pleased to see the two bridges in question
being replaced under the Provincial Roads Program," said Harry Harding,
MHA for Bonavista North. "This funding is in addition to the current
upgrading/resurfacing of Routes 320 and 330 in Bonavista North and will
further enhance the safety of the motoring public."
"I am delighted to see this work proceeding at this
time," said Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia-St. Marys. "It is an
integral step in the ongoing progress in road improvements being carried
out in my district."
The road upgrades are part of the $70.7 million,
2009-10 Provincial Roads Improvement Program. The program will create an
estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial
Government's infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $4 billion
over the next several years.
