Province Continues to Deliver Improved Roads

Motorists can expect a profusion of paving in the Bellevue and Burin-Placentia West areas as the 2009-10 Provincial Roads Improvement Program continues to unfold.

The program is part of a $300 million investment in transportation infrastructure committed to in Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation.

"This government' s commitment to transportation infrastructure is unparalleled," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "A significant part of that investment is the $70.7 million earmarked for this year' s roads program."

The following road upgrades have been tendered:

  • A section of Route 214, Monkstown Road will be upgraded; a section of Route 212-10 in Jacques Fontaine will be pulverized and repaved; and there will be slope stabilization work at Route 212 in Harbour Mille; and,
  • A section of Route 210-16-1 in Boat Harbour will be upgraded and repaved; a section of Route 222 at Salt Pond will be resurfaced; the timber bridge at Parkers Cove will be replaced with a culvert and the retaining wall will be repaired; a culvert near Jean de Baie will be replaced; and a storm sewer will be installed at Harris Drive in Marystown.

"It is wonderful to see this government continue to invest so heavily in our transportation infrastructure," said Bellevue MHA Calvin Peach. "This work will certainly contribute to the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors traveling throughout the district."

"This is an ongoing commitment from our government to upgrade road infrastructure in the district of Burin-Placentia West," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin-Placentia West. "We continue to see upgrades in our transportation links that are critical to business and resident travellers, but are equally important to those who come to see this beautiful part of our province."

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $4 billion over the next several years.
