Significant Work Continues on the Trans Labrador Highway

The Williams Government continues its aggressive work schedule on the Trans Labrador Highway (TLH) this year by issuing a tender to upgrade a section of Phase I of the highway.

Fifty kilometres of Route 500 from Labrador West towards Churchill Falls will be upgraded as part of the tender.

"As each piece of work on the Trans Labrador Highway unfolds we move closer to fulfilling a promise to the people of Labrador," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "This year will see significant upgrades to Phase I and we are committed to making the Phase III connection in late fall, thus completing the TLH."

Approximately $85 million will be invested in Phase I and Phase III of the TLH this year, with a portion of the work cost-shared with the Federal Government under the Building Canada Fund.

"We are in the third year of our five year Northern Strategic Plan for Labrador," said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs. "That plan is a clear pledge from the Williams Government to provide a better future for Labradorians and an upgraded transportation network is a key piece of that commitment."

"I am proud that our governments commitment to the people of Labrador remains strong," said Jim Baker, Labrador West MHA.  "It is fantastic to see the work on the Trans Labrador Highway steadily progressing, as we get closer to the completion of this vital piece of transportation infrastructure for our residents and travellers."

This year the Williams Government will invest over $300 million in transportation infrastructure as part of Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation. The Provincial Governments infrastructure strategy is valued at more than $4 billion over the next several years.
