Trans Labrador Highway to Get Hard-Top
This years extensive work on the Trans Labrador
Highway (TLH) continues, as the Williams Government has issued a Request
for Proposals (RFP) to hard-surface a section of Phase I. As part of
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong
Foundation, approximately $56 million will be invested in Phase I
and Phase III of the TLH.
The RFP seeks proposals to determine the most
cost-effective approach to hard-surfacing an 80-kilometre section of the
Trans Labrador Highway, from Wabush Junction towards Churchill Falls.
"A highlight of our governments record investment in
the Trans Labrador Highway this year will be this project," said the
Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "In
fact, this represents our most significant hard-surfacing project to
date on the TLH."
The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador
Affairs, noted that the Northern Strategic Plan for Labrador
lists hard-surfacing of Phase I of the TLH as a major transportation
infrastructure objective.
"We as a government are clearly and definitively
building on our long-standing commitment to residents of Labrador to
improve their transportation network," said Minister Hickey.
"It is great to see such significant progress being
made on this large and much needed project," said Jim Baker, Labrador
West MHA. "The magnitude of this investment illustrates, once again,
our governments pledge to the people of Labrador."
This year the Williams Government is investing over
$300 million in transportation infrastructure. The Provincial
Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more than $4 billion
over the next several years.
