Provincial Government Invests Over
$150,000 in Burin Peninsula Recreation Infrastructure
Two recreational facilities on the Burin Peninsula
are getting substantial infrastructure upgrades, with
the help of a $150,409 investment provided by the
Provincial Government.
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, announced today that the Town of
Grand Bank is receiving $85,468 to help with exterior
renovations (roof and siding) at the communitys
swimming pool and soccer facility, while the Town of
Fortune will receive $64,941 to assist with the
installation of two new dehumidifiers, new exit doors,
protective floor matting, and new lighting in the
Fortune Arena.
"Investment in community recreational infrastructure
supports the goals of the provinces recreation and
sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and
Labrador, in that it makes facilities more functional,
safe and comfortable, and encourages more of our
citizens to pursue an active lifestyle, said Minister
French. These projects will help extend the life of the
recreational facilities in question, and ensure they
continue to meet the recreational needs of residents
throughout the region.
The Town of Grand Bank is contributing an additional
$15,082 to its infrastructure projects, while the Town
of Fortune will provide $11,459 for the Fortune Arena
project.
This funding will allow the towns to carry out
necessary repairs to their recreational facilities,
said the Honourable Darin King, MHA for the District of
Grand Bank. The improvements will ensure their
long-term viability, and is another example of how our
government strives to ensure that our residents have
access to facilities essential to an active lifestyle. I
offer my thanks to Minister French for the support he is
providing for these two projects.
In 2009, the Department of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation has, to date, announced more than $2.3
million for improvements to recreational infrastructure
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, including $630,854
to install artificial turf and upgrade the International
Soccer Pitch at the Team Gushue Sports Complex in Mount
Pearl; $620,905 for improvements to the Paradise
Wellness Centre, and almost $560,000 in Community
Capital Grant Program funding for more than 40
communities across the province.
The development and redevelopment of community
infrastructure is among the key objectives of the
provinces recreation and sport strategy, Active,
Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). In the past
three years alone, more than $13.2 million in new
funding has been invested in the recreation and sports
sectors.
