Newfoundland and Labrador Publishers
Receive Funding for Professional Development
Opportunities
Five local publishing
companies have collectively received $22,810 through the
Provincial Governments Cultural Economic Development
Program (CEDP) to attend two major library shows and
conferences in 2010: one in February hosted by the
Ontario Library Association in Toronto, and the other in
March, hosted by the Public Library Association in
Portland, Oregon.
Our local publishing
companies greatly benefit from participating in national
and international literary events, the Honourable Clyde
Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
With this added investment, we have increased the
number of opportunities available to those individuals
seeking further exposure and professional development in
the world of publishing.
Breakwater Books, Flanker
Press, Creative Book Publishing, Boulder Publications
and Rattling Books will each receive an equal share of
the approved funding.
We appreciate the added
investment the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
is making in the provinces publishing sector, said
Janet Russell, Publisher, Rattling Books. Being able to
participate in publishing events outside of the province
and country is an excellent way to learn, first-hand,
about the latest developments within the publishing
sector. It is important for local publishers to learn
how best to adapt to the recent changes in the sector,
while developing new audiences for Newfoundland and
Labrador work through the international library market.
This latest investment is
in addition to the $200,000 the provinces book
publishing industry received earlier this year through
the Publishers Assistance Program (PAP), a component of
the $2.8 million CEDP Program.
CEDP projects are
selected on the basis of economic impact, professional
involvement, project objectives, partnerships and
interpretive content. For more information on
