Minister Congratulates Soccer Association
Award Winners and Hall of Fame Inductees
The Honourable Clyde
Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation,
today congratulated the award winners and Hall of Fame
inductees honoured at the 2009 Newfoundland and Labrador
Soccer Association�s (NLSA) annual awards banquet, held
Saturday (November 21) at the Battery Hotel.
�We value the
contribution and commitment of our athletes as they
strive to achieve athletic excellence,� said Minister
Jackman. �As members of the largest organized sport in
the province, this year�s NLSA award recipients and Hall
of Fame inductees have been deservingly rewarded.�
With more than 200 years
of combined experience as players, coaches,
administrators, referees and volunteers, seven
individuals were inducted into the NLSA Hall of Fame
this year: Len Aucoin, Charlie Chaytor, Fred Brien, Jim
Hamlyn, Don Hodder, Jim Royle and Darryl Smith.
In addition to the Hall
of Fame ceremony, eight NLSA awards were presented in
the following categories: Female Junior Player of the
Year � Hannah Rivkin; Female Senior Player of the Year �
Laura Breen; Male Junior Player of the Year � Jacob
Westcott; Male Senior Player of the Year � Zack Wade;
Coach of the Year � Noel �Jake� Stanford; Team of the
Year � Holy Cross �The Dock�; Executive of the Year �
Heather Slaney; Ross Arlett Memorial Award � Dave
Liverman.
Laura Breen, Rudy Norman
and the St. Lawrence Laurentians were also named the
Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Performers for the
Decade (2000-2009). In addition, an honourary life
membership with the NSLA was awarded to Jeff Babstock
for his more than 50 years of contribution and
achievements in the sport of soccer.
In 2009, the Department
of Tourism, Culture and Recreation provided $35,500 in
operational support to the NLSA, an increase of $3,200
from the previous year, to support its activities
throughout the province. Since 2004, the NLSA has
received $156,000 through the department to assist with
the travel costs of athletes travelling to and from
out-of-province competition. In July, the Provincial
Government announced its contribution of more than
$630,000 to install artificial turf and upgrade the
International Soccer Pitch at the Team Gushue Sports
Complex in Mount Pearl.
