Arts and Letters Submission Deadline is January 15

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that January 15, 2010, is the deadline for submissions for the 2010 Arts and Letters Awards program, which for almost 60 years has encouraged and supported the creative process in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since 1952, the Arts and Letters Awards have provided an opportunity for both emerging and established artists to participate in a program which highlights and rewards the work of individuals involved in a wide range of artistic endeavours, said Minister Jackman. The program has served as a launching pad for some of our most esteemed visual artists, writers, and musicians who have gone on to highly-acclaimed careers in their respective fields.

Prizes are awarded in two divisions, junior and senior, and in a number of categories within the literary arts, visual arts and musical composition.

Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, provided an additional $25,000 to administer the program, bringing the total annual budget to $135,000.

The Arts and Letters gala awards presentation is scheduled to take place April 17, 2010, at The Rooms. Total prize money for this years program is just over $46,000; with 36 awards of $1,000 each to be awarded in the senior division, and 35 awards of $250 each in the junior division. Prize money awarded for the prestigious Percy Janes First Novel Award is $1,500.
