Provincial Historic Commemorations Board Calls for Nominations

The Provincial Historic Commemorations Board is encouraging citizens to help officially recognize the numerous persons, places, events and traditions of historical importance that have shaped Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program, launched in November 2008, is unique in that it recognizes provincially significant people, places and events, but also aspects of our living heritage that are less tangible in nature. The board is now making a second call for nominations, for what will be its second round of designations in 2010. An announcement of the first Provincial Historic Commemorations designations is expected to be made later this fall.

"To strengthen our sense of identity, and to help us understand where we came from, it is important to celebrate what makes us unique," said Minister Jackman. "We have a lot to be proud about in this province and, through this program, our provincial treasures will be recognized and showcased throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond."

Franoise Enguehard, Chair of the Historic Commemorations Board, said the submission process to-date has been positive.

"One of the main objectives of this program is to raise awareness about those aspects of history and culture that are of importance to Newfoundland and Labrador." said Ms. Enguehard. "Through citizen-led nominations, we are providing a greater awareness of our provinces well-known history and culture from those who have lived and experienced it our residents."

Nominations will be accepted by individuals, communities and organizations. For criteria, guidelines and nomination applications, visit: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/heritage/commemoration_program.html or call 709-729-6901.

Establishment of the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program was among the objectives outlined in the provinces cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture (2006). Since the release of the strategy, the Provincial Government has invested more than $25 million in new funding into the cultural and heritage sectors.
