Two recreational facilities in the District of
Carbonear-Harbour Grace are getting substantial infrastructure upgrades,
thanks to a $372, 451 investment provided by the Provincial Government.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, said the Town of Carbonear is receiving $256,478
to help with the installation of a new dehumidification system at the
towns swimming pool, while the Town of Harbour Grace will receive
$115,973 to assist with the installation of new boards and safety glass
around the ice surface at S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium.
"These particular projects are designed to make the
facilities more functional, accessible, and safe, and to encourage more
area residents to participate in recreation and sport activities," said
Minister Jackman. "The funding for the Carbonear Swimming Pool will help
save on water heating costs, while providing appropriate air exchange in
the change rooms, lobby and viewing area. The installation of a new
enclosure around the ice surface in Harbour Grace will, meanwhile,
ensure the safety of both players and spectators alike."
The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, MHA for Carbonear-Harbour
Grace, said the Provincial Governments investment in the local arena
and swimming pool will help to enhance infrastructure that is used by
residents in the entire region.
"Residents of Carbonear, Harbour Grace and surrounding
areas frequently use the Carbonear Swimming Pool and the S.W. Moores
Memorial Stadium," said Minister Kennedy. "This investment will ensure
that both facilities are enhanced and maintained for users into the
future."
In 2009, the Department of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation has, to date, announced more than $1.56 million for
improvements to recreational infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador, including $630,854 to install artificial turf and upgrade the
International Soccer Pitch at the Team Gushue Sports Complex in Mount
Pearl, and almost $560,000 in Community Capital Grant Program funding
for more than 40 communities across the province.
The development and redevelopment of community
infrastructure is among the key objectives of the provinces recreation
and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador
(2007). In the past three years alone, more than $9 million in new
funding has been invested in the recreation and sports sectors.
