July 23, 2009Province Invests Over $70,000 in
Visual Arts Sector
The visual arts sector in Newfoundland and Labrador has received
$70,612 in Provincial Government support through the 2009 Cultural
Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"The Provincial Government remains committed to nurturing artistic
expression and to supporting the talented individuals who contribute so
much to our cultural and economic development," said the Honourable
Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The visual
arts sector continues to flourish with the development of local talent,
as well as the continued influx of artists from throughout Canada and
the world, who have brought new influences, and new ideas, to our
communities."
Minister Jackman said Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong
Foundation provided $60,000 to Visual Artists Newfoundland and
Labrador (VANL) an increase of $5,000 to support its general
operations, advocacy activities, professional development programs and
other initiatives which benefit visual artists throughout the province.
"The CEDP program is the only program available to support the
ongoing operation of our not-for-profit organization for this province's
visual artists," said Sara Tilley, Executive Director of VANL. "The
increase to this year's funding indicates to us that the government is
behind our work, and that it understands the contributions visual
artists make to life in this province."
Other CEDP support provided to the visual arts community, to date,
includes:
$5,462 to the League of Artists of Western Newfoundland
(LAWN) to offset costs associated with producing a catalogue to
accompany a summer 2009 exhibition of members work at the Sir
Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery; and,
$5,150 in to visual artist Marlene Creates to assist with the
cost of her attendance at four universities and one arts centre
in the United Kingdom in 2009, where she will present visiting
artist lecture, attend seminars, and exhibit her work.
The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation also supports the
visual arts sector through the Arts and Letters Awards Program, which
this year received an additional $25,000 in annualized support; through
funding provided to the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC),
and through the $125,000 Art Bank Program, administered by The Rooms.
CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business
plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. For more
