Province Invests Over $120,000 in Music Sector Events
The Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival, being held this
week in St. Johns, is among several music sector events and initiatives
which have recently received support totalling $122,000 through the 2009
Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).
The Provincial Government continues to invest heavily in developing,
nurturing, showcasing and marketing our musical talent and events, said
the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation. We also welcome national and international musicians of
every genre to share their gifts with us, and to experience the
incredibly diverse music scene that exists throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador.
Music sector organizations/events approved for 2009 CEDP funding are:
- Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (NSO)
$35,000 to offset costs associated with the NSOs marketing
and public awareness campaign, aimed at increasing its various
revenue streams, including special fundraising events and season
subscription and ticket sales.
- Newfoundland and Labrador Folk
Arts Council $25,000 to assist with production and marketing
of the 2009 Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, to be held
August 7-9 in St. Johns.

runs until July 19.
- Canadian Organization of Campus
Activities $20,000 to offset the cost of its annual national
conference, which was held this year in St. Johns from June 17-21.
The event provided an opportunity to showcase many local musicians
and performers.
- Quintessential Voice Ensemble
$10,000 to participate in the 38th Florilege Vocal de Tours
International Competition, held in Tours, France May 27 - June 6,
2009.
- Tuckamore Festival $8,000
to help market its 2009 summer concerts and community outreach
activities, to be held Aug. 2-16.
- Southern Shore Folk Arts Council
$4,000 to support the annual Shamrock Festival, showcasing
Newfoundland/Irish music, to be held July 25-26 in Ferryland.
These organizations and events are
well-established, and well-known for drawing both residents and
visitors, said Minister Jackman. This support is an example of our
governments continued efforts to build our cultural industries.
The CEDP is a $2.8 million program which supports arts, cultural and
heritage initiatives throughout the province. CEDP projects are selected
based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for
development within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program
