The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, today announced $75,000 has been committed to support Sport
Newfoundland and Labrador (SNL), Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador (RNL)
and School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) in their efforts to
implement the principles of Canadian Sport for Life, a philosophy of
long-term athlete development.
"By supporting Canadian Sport for Life, also known as CS4L, we are
providing children and youth with the tools to develop their athletic
abilities, from their initial involvement in sport, through to the
competition stage, and then beyond to being active for life," said
Minister Jackman. "The goal is to have a population that is more
physically active, and to provide more opportunities for our athletes to
excel at the provincial, national and international levels."
Developed by Sport Canada, Canadian Sport for Life is based on the
physical, mental, emotional and cognitive development of children and
youth. It encompasses a seven-stage framework of athletic development:
Active Start, FUNdamentals, Learning to Train, Training to Train,
Training to Compete, Training to Win, and Active for Life.
"We are extremely pleased with the progress we have made in
Newfoundland and Labrador in teaching, and now implementing, the
principles of Canadian Sport for Life," said Doug Fowler, President of
SNL. "We believe this program can contribute significantly to the
overall health of the people of the province by allowing more
opportunities for individuals to become involved in sport and physical
activity."
Throughout the past year, three Canadian Sport for Life
presentations/workshops have been held for various provincial sports
organizations. These presentations allowed the organizations to develop
their knowledge of long-term athlete development, and how to implement
the stages within each individual sport.
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation provides
$875,000 in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce
new initiatives which support the goals and objectives of the provinces
recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and
Labrador. This funding includes an additional $200,000 for
operational support for the provincial sports organizations and
federations; $50,000 to improve the provinces coaching capacity; and
$50,000 for hosting Atlantic, national and international sporting events
all of which support the goals of long-term athlete development.
These initiatives also build on the first two years of investment in
the recreation and sport strategy, which has seen more than $8 million
in new funding invested in the sector over the past three years.
