Investment Supports Presentation of Carbonear Island History

The Carbonear Heritage Society has received $19,000 through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) to develop an interpretive plan for a museum exhibit designed to showcase the historical significance of Carbonear Island, located at the mouth of Carbonear Harbour.

Carbonear Island was used by area inhabitants as early as 1614 but is perhaps best known as the site of seminal battles between the English and the French, in 1697 and 1705, for control of this area of North America, said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. The island also has a long history as a seasonal fishing room and as a navigational light station. It is anticipated that this interpretive plan will highlight the colourful history of the island and lay the groundwork for the development of a permanent exhibit.

The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is pleased to see continued investment in the preservation and presentation of the regions heritage.

Carbonear Island is already recognized, both provincially and federally, as a site of historical significance, said Minister Kennedy. With this investment, Carbonear will see the development of a new attraction which will provide residents and visitors alike with the opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the town and the region as a whole.

The 2009 CEDP program is providing a total of $2.8 million to the arts, cultural and heritage sectors, with $1.3 million earmarked for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about $1.5 million for the professional arts sector.

CEDP projects are selected on the basis of economic impact, professional involvement, project objectives, partnerships and interpretive content. For more information on guidelines, visit www.gov.tcr.nl.ca/tcr/services_programs/cedp/heritage/.
