SSNL Holding Provincial Track and Field Championships This Weekend

The Provincial High School Track and Field Championships are set to go this coming weekend at the Pearlgate Track and Field Complex in Mount Pearl. Bishops College in St. John�s is the host school. Five qualification meets have been held in St. John�s , Carbonear, Gambo, Marystown and Stephenville over the past two weeks and the top teams and individuals have advanced to this weekend final.

Approximately 200 athletes from 26 schools across the island will compete in the two-day event. Competing schools include, from St. John�s, Bishops College, Booth Memorial, Gonzaga High, St. Bonaventures College, and Holy Heart of Mary High and O�Donel High and Mount Pearl Senior High from Mount Pearl, Baltimore High (Ferryland), Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Carbonear Collegiate, Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown), Glovertown Academy, Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Holy Trinity High (Torbay), Jane Collins (Hare Bay), Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville), Marystown Central High, Mobile High School, New World Island Academy (Summerford), Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Smallwood Academy (Gambo), St. James Regional High (Port Aux Basques) and Stephenville High.

The event gets underway 4:30 p.m. Friday. The first session will include the 1500m, 4 X 400 relay, 4 X 100 integrated relay, the girl�s javelin and boy�s shot put. The meet continues Saturday morning with an opening ceremonies at 8:45 a.m. and events starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday�s events include 200m, 800m, 1500m, race walk, girls discus, high jump, long jump, 100m, 400m, 3000m, 4 X 100 relay and standing long jump. School Sports are pleased to be able to include athletes with an intellectual disability into our programs. Once again this year, our track and field meet includes the 100m, 200m, shot up and standing long jump for Special Olympians.

Championship banners will be awarded to the top male and female teams. Gold and silver team medals, as well as gold, silver and bronze individual event medals will be awarded.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
