and Culture Centre Theatre
to be Named in Honour of Musical Director
The theatre located in the regional Arts and Culture
Centre in Corner Brook will be named in honour of local musical director
Gary Graham, during an evening of music and celebration tomorrow
(Friday, May 15).
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, along with the Honourable Tom Marshall, MHA for
the District of Humber East, will be on hand for the event, which will
include an official plaque unveiling ceremony.
"Gary Graham has played an integral role in the
development of the musical, cultural and artistic life on the west coast
of the province," said Minister Jackman. "He has been a music teacher,
choir director and musical director for Theatre Newfoundland and
Labradors annual community production, and has helped guide the careers
of many successful performers from this province."
Minister Marshall said when audiences enter the
theatre, they will be reminded of Mr. Grahams tremendous contribution
as an artist and an ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador.
"His passion for the musical arts over almost four
decades has greatly impacted the City of Corner Brook," said Minister
Marshall. "The lives of his many young students have been enriched by
his unwavering commitment, and several local choirs and theatre arts
groups have benefited from his incredible talents."
Dr. John Boitsefski, president-elect of the Rotary
Club of Humber, and committee chair, said naming the theatre in honour
of Mr. Grahams contribution to the local arts community was very
fitting.
"This is the home of Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador
and Gary Grahams presence on its stage has brought a wealth of culture
to its many patrons over the years," he said. "Gary Graham is most
deserving of this tribute."
Tomorrows special ceremony is set to include the
unveiling of plaques at the two entrances to the theatre as well as
musical and theatrical performances.
The Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre opened in
March 1968. The centre houses a 400-seat theatre, a 25-metre swimming
pool and an art exhibition area.
