Randall Maggs, author of Night Work: The Sawchuck
Poems has been named the winner of the 2008 Winterset Award. It is
the first book of poetry to win the prestigious award since it was
established in 2000.
Hosted annually by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts
Council (NLAC), the awards ceremony was held yesterday (March 26) at
Government House.
"Newfoundland and Labrador has produced an
extraordinary number of successful writers relative to our population,
and the Winterset Award is an excellent way to recognize and showcase
the provinces literary talent," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman,
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "I congratulate Mr. Maggs
and finalists Sara Tilley and Marie Wadden, and look forward to the
creation of more remarkable work."
Night Work: The Sawchuck Poems
is published by Brick Books in London, ON. Ms. Tilley was nominated for
Skin Room, published by Pedlar Press in Toronto, while Ms. Wadden
was nominated for Where the Pavement Ends: Canadas Aboriginal
Recovery Movement and the Urgent Need for Reconciliation, published
by Douglas and McIntyre of Vancouver.
The winner of the Winterset Award receives $5,000 and
the two finalists each receive $1,000. Created in memory of the
prize-winning author and local historian, Sandra Fraser Gwyn, the
