Provincial Boys Basketball Tournaments
to be Held This Weekend
The high school basketball schedule continues this
coming weekend with four boys� titles up for grabs. Corner Brook High
School will host the first provincial tournament in their new high
school, as they play host to the 8 team 4A Basketball Tournament. Teams
will play in an eight-team, two-division format to determine the overall
champion. Playing in the black division will be Elwood High (Deer Lake),
Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), St Catherine�s High (Mt. Carmel)
and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). Competition in the Gold
Division will be Bishops College (St. John�s), Roncalli High (Avondale),
Corner Brook High and O�Donel High (Mount Pearl). Games get underway
1:15 p.m. today (Thursday, March 26). Both Corner Brook High and
Grenfell College facilities will be used for the tournament. The top
teams from each division advance to the semi-finals 10:00 a.m. and 12:00
noon on Saturday with the champion being declared after the 6:00 p.m.
championship game.
Fatima Academy in St. Brides will be the host school
for the 3A boys� event, also involving eight teams, in the Blue and
Black division. Playing in the Blue Division will be the host school,
Fatima Academy, St. James Regional High (Port Aux Basques), Mobile High
and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay). Rounding out the field in the
Black Division will be Pasadena Academy, Gander Collegiate, St. Lawrence
Academy and St. Kevin�s High (Goulds). The first game of the schedule
will get underway at 12:15 p.m. Thursday. Round robin games will
continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The top two teams will meet in
the cross over games at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Saturday, followed by a
1:30 p.m. championship game.
Stella Maris High in Trepassey will host eight schools
as well, all vying for the 2A championship banner. Division A will
include Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Christ the King School (Rushoon),
Cape John Collegiate (LaScie) and Random Island Academy. Facing off in
Division B will be Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), St. Mary�s All Grade
(Mary�s Harbour), Bay d�Espoir Academy and Stella Maris High. The
tournament gets underway 1:30 p.m. Thursday and concludes with the
championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Fair Play Boys tournament will be a six-team
event, hosted by Grandy�s River Collegiate in Burnt Island. Teams
involved in the tournament include the host, Grandy�s River Collegiate,
Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), and Clarenville High playing in
Division A and Corner Brook High, Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and
Gander Collegiate playing in Division B. The tournament starts at 6:00
p.m. Thursday and continues with round robin play throughout Friday. The
first place teams in each division get a bye to the semi-finals with the
second and third place teams crossing over in a quarter final action.
The semi-finals are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Saturday
followed by the championship game.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship,
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the
Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship
Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an
individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver
medals, while the top team in each division will receive a championship
banner. Individual winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze
medals.
