School Sports NL Hosts Participation Nations Festival of Sport Extravaganza

To celebrate Education Week in the provinces capital, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador is hosting a sport extravaganza for students in Grade 7 and 8 on March 3.

Participation Nation is a School Sports program aimed at the junior high level. The mission is to promote active and healthy living in our provincial student body by developing and organizing non-competitive sports events which encourages participation and fun. Our organization believes every student should have the opportunity to experience a fun sport environment without the pressure of winning, or the disappointment of being "not good enough" to make a team.

In keeping within the spirit of the Participation Nation, the students will participate in a variety of non-competitive activities. The programs philosophy has always centred on fun, fitness and fairplay.

Ten schools from the Metro area have been invited to select 20 students (male and female) from their school who do not play on a competitive sports team. The event is being held at the NL Sports Centre with the official opening beginning at 10:00 a.m. and will wrap up at 2:00 p.m.

Students will play co-operative games, volleyball and have hip hop dance instruction.

Confirmed guests include representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association, Memorial Sea Hawks, and Krista Fowler from Danceworx Studios Inc.
