Canadas privacy commissioners and
ombudsmen representing federal, provincial and
territorial jurisdictions will hold a media availability
to discuss a joint resolution about a Federal Government
proposal to expand the tools that police and national
security agencies can use to acquire digital evidence.
The resolution addresses privacy
concerns stemming from two pieces of legislation
introduced in the House of Commons in June. The main
purpose of the bills is to require all wireless,
Internet and other telecommunications companies to allow
for wiretapping, and ensure that they comply with law
enforcement demands for subscriber data without
judicial authorization.
The commissioners will also release a
second resolution on privacy issues related to online
personal health records.
The media availability will be held
during the biannual meeting of Canadas privacy
commissioners and ombudspeople, hosted by the
Information and Privacy Commissioner for Newfoundland
and Labrador, Ed Ring.
A photo opportunity will follow the
media availability.
