Government Supports Site Reforestation in Bonavista North

As a result of site preparation work under the 2009 Provincial Silviculture Program, approximately 100 hectares of land in the Bonavista North area is ready for planting next summer to ensure the healthy regeneration of the forest resource in the area.

"Site preparation is an important technique that enables us to reforest commercially-harvested sites and meet the wood supply needs of our forest industry," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "These efforts help to ensure a viable future for our resources."

The sites were harvested between 1998 and 2006 and have not regenerated naturally. The total value of the site preparation work carried out this summer was $26,500.

"I am very pleased with governments funding for silviculture work in my district," said Harry Harding, MHA for Bonavista North. "This project will ensure the long-lasting health of our forests."

Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation includes a $10.9 million investment into the Provincial Silviculture Program, a $200,000 increase over last year.
