Silviculture Activities Spruce up Bonavista South

As part of the 2009 Provincial Silviculture Program, approximately 352,000 tree seedlings have been planted in Bonavista South over 141 hectares of land. Site preparation has also been completed on another 400 hectares for a total investment this year of $156,000.

"Silviculture helps guarantee the long-term growth of the provinces forest resources and the sustainability of the forest industry," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "Its important for government to support these regeneration initiatives as they further enhance the economic viability and value of the forest resource."

The tree seedlings, comprising black spruce, white spruce and Norway spruce, were grown at the Provincial Tree Nursery at Wooddale. Site preparation also occurred with the majority of activity in close proximity to Clarenville in anticipation of future planting in 2010.

"These projects demonstrate governments solid commitment to the provinces forest industry," said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. "Silviculture activities will enable the forests in my district to thrive for many years to come."

Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation includes a $10.9 million investment by the Provincial Government for silviculture activities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, a $200,000 increase over last year.
