Canadas Energy and Mines Ministers
Newfoundland and Labradors energy and mining sectors
will be front and centre during the 2009 Energy and
Mines Ministers Conference being held at the Sheraton
Hotel in St. Johns North Americas oldest city on
Monday and Tuesday (August 31 and September 1) as
ministers discuss topics ranging from energy efficiency
to green mining.
The annual conference of federal, provincial and
territorial energy and mines ministers is being
co-hosted by the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Natural
Resources Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, and
the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources
Canada.
"We have a great list of reasons as to why
Newfoundland and Labrador is worthy of hosting the
meeting of energy and mines ministers from across the
country," said Minister Dunderdale. "We are Canadas
largest producer of conventional crude oil. We are home
to the 3,074megawatt Lower Churchill hydroelectric
project and we have world-class nickel, iron ore and
other mineral resources combined with a capable,
dedicated workforce and world-class research
facilities."
This years conference, Challenges and
Opportunities, will address the obstacles and
opportunities facing the energy and mining sectors as a
result of the downturn in the global economy. The
conference will include information sessions on short-
and long-term industry challenges, investment
opportunities, recovery from the financial recession and
international competitiveness. Innovation and
technology, research and development and sustainable
green energy solutions will also be discussed.
"Together as ministers, we can come one step closer
to realizing our respective visions for mineral and
energy resource development," said Minister Dunderdale.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Newfoundland and
Labrador to promote the potential that exists within our
province to provide energy solutions to the rest of
Canada. Our abundance of natural resources contributes
to the success of Canadas resource industries and
energy security."
The meetings conclude Tuesday afternoon with a news
conference involving all ministers.
