Government Promotes Healthy
Tree Growth in Baie Verte-Springdale
Pre-commercial thinning
is now complete on 85 hectares of land on the Baie Verte
Peninsula as part of this years Provincial Silviculture
Program.
Silviculture is an important part of our approach to
sustainable forest management in this province, said
the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural
Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and
Agrifoods Agency. Our silviculture program will
contribute to the continued growth and improvement of
these communities and our valuable forest resources.
The project, valued at $63,325, took place at Middle Arm
Ridge, southwest of the community of Middle Arm. The
existing immature trees were thinned to a desired
density of 3,000 stems per hectare. The project employed
10 people and created 80 person-weeks of employment.
I am very pleased with governments continued
commitment to silviculture activities in the province
and particularly in this district, said Kevin Pollard,
MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. These initiatives will
help to guarantee the long-term health of the regions
forests.
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation includes
a $10.9 million investment by the Provincial Government
for silviculture activities throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador, an increase of $200,000 over last year.
