New Maps of West Coast to Help Advance Mining and Petroleum Sectors

The Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey Division has released a series of high-resolution aeromagnetic maps of the provinces west coast. These maps are essential tools used to geologically identify key areas of interest for potential mineral and petroleum exploration.

"It is important for us to build upon our geoscientific knowledge to attract industry interest and identify prospective areas for future exploration," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "These maps will play a vital role in further advancing the mining and petroleum sectors, and will help to guarantee our provinces continued success."

Aeromagnetic surveys involve the measuring of the magnetic properties of rock from low-flying aircraft. By employing this particular method, a large area can be studied in great detail. The survey was completed this past winter and cost approximately $400,000.

Fourteen maps were produced as part of this survey and cover seven National Topographic System (NTS) areas. The maps can be viewed at www.nr.gov.nl.ca/mines&en/geosurvey/publications/openfiles  Airborne survey profile data and interpolated grids will also be available from the Newfoundland and Labrador Resource Atlas at gis.geosurv.gov.nl.ca A CD-ROM version of the maps is available from the Geological Survey Division upon request at 709-729-6928.

This survey complements additional aeromagnetic surveys completed by the departments Energy Branch in Western Newfoundland over the last year as part of the $5 million Petroleum Exploration Enhancement Program (PEEP), announced in 2007 as part of the Energy Plan. These results will be made public later this year.
