Public Advisory: Fire Index Remains High for Parts of Labrador

The fire weather index remains high for the areas of Port Hope Simpson, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Wabush and Labrador City. The Department of Natural Resources is advising the public to exercise extreme caution when heading out to campgrounds and cabins and into wooded areas.

The Labrador region has been experiencing very hot and dry weather conditions which are expected to continue over the next week. The public is reminded that under these conditions a fire can easily be started. Open fires are not permitted due to current wind conditions, with the exception of the Churchill Falls area.

The department is asking the public to become familiar with the provincial Forest Fire Regulations which can be viewed at www.nr.gov.nl.ca/forestry/forestfire/default.stm.

The toll-free number to report a forest fire across the province is 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
