Public Advisory: Extreme Fire Index in Labrador

Due to an extreme fire weather index in Happy Valley-Goose Bay the Department of Natural Resources is asking people to be careful when heading out to campgrounds and cabins and into wooded areas.

The Labrador region is experiencing very hot and dry weather which is expected to continue for the next several days. The public is reminded that under these conditions a fire can easily be started from a discarded cigarette or a lit match, as well as from all-terrain vehicle use in wooded areas. Open fires are not permitted.

The department is currently dealing with two ongoing fires in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area. Crews have contained the fires and are continuing suppression efforts.

The Forest Fire Regulations can be found at www.nr.gov.nl.ca/forestry/forestfire/default.stm

The toll-free number to report a forest fire across the province is 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
