Congratulations to MUNs Earth Science Team on International Award
An earth science team from Memorial University, Rock Enerji, has been
awarded the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Stonley Award
for placing third at the world Imperial Barrel Competition in Denver,
Colorado, earlier this week. This is the best showing ever from a
Canadian University in the competition.
The award follows on the teams first place win at the Canadian Regional
Imperial Barrel competition. The team also received $5,000 to help
support the universitys Petroleum Geoscience Department.
I want to congratulate members of the team who have worked so hard and
rightfully earned the respect and recognition of professionals in the
field, said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural
Resources. This award helps to solidify Memorial Universitys
reputation as a world-class educational institution in the area of
geoscience. The impressive showing by Rock Enerji demonstrates the
strength and quality of our earth science program and positions the
Province well as we continue to expand our geoscience knowledge related
to our basins.
The Imperial Barrel Award is a competition for geosciences students from
around the world and is sponsored by the American Association of
Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). The members of Rock Enerji are Burcu
Gacal-Isler, Jennifer Cranshaw, Tiffany Piercey and Adam Gogacz. They
are all graduate students from the Department of Earth Sciences. The
team coach, Elliot Burden, is a professor with the Earth Sciences
faculty.
In April, Rock Enerji initially competed against 10 regional teams to
earn a place at the world championships. These teams were selected from
approximately 90 international entrants.
