Interest High in Newfoundland and Labrador Petroleum Sector

Interest in new petroleum developments in Newfoundland and Labrador was evident at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston this week in the number of visitors to the provinces booth and a sold-out speech focused on growth and opportunities.

"People know our region and they know there is growth and opportunity," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "A high level of awareness of our projects was noticed on the floor of the conference and delegates reported making excellent contacts that many expect to lead to new business."

Minister Dunderdale accompanied 120 delegates representing 60 companies and organizations from the province to this years conference. She delivered a keynote address to conference delegates, entitled Newfoundland and Labrador: An Emerging Energy Warehouse Growth and Opportunities.

"It was very clear that industry is interested in what is happening in Newfoundland and Labrador and they are following developments in our jurisdiction very closely," said Minister Dunderdale. "Few other North American jurisdictions can come close to our energy warehouse of oil, natural gas, hydroelectric and wind resources. Industry is taking notice."

The minister used the OTC to share information on the provinces successes in the past year and meet with players interested in further developing their exploration portfolios in our region. In the last 12 months, the province signed a deal to develop the Hebron project, produced its billionth barrel of oil and secured $132-million in new work commitments in the 2008 land sale by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.

"When we are able to present all of our accomplishments and potential in the energy sector as we were able to do at the OTC, our abundance of rich and diverse natural resources truly is enviable and undeniable," said Minister Dunderdale. "Add to this the recent discovery by StatoilHydro of hydrocarbons in the Flemish Pass Basin, the continuation of negotiations on the Hibernia South extension project and anticipated first oil from the North Amethyst field this fall, and there is no doubt Newfoundland and Labrador has much to offer."

The OTC concludes today.
