The value-added and innovative uses for the provinces
valuable forest resource will be on display in Corner Brook Friday and
Saturday, April 24 and 25, as part of Forest Fair 2009, the second
annual event dedicated to showcasing the career opportunities and local
products available within the forest sector.
"Forestry makes a major economic contribution to many
rural communities, particularly throughout our central and western
regions, and it is important for us to continue to diversify and grow
the industry," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural
Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods
Agency. "Our annual forest fair is a chance for us to educate
school-aged children about the importance of the resource and the career
possibilities, as well as promote the wide range of local products
produced here."
Forest Fair 2009 is hosted by the Department of
Natural Resources Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, which is headquartered
in Corner Brook. The agency has identified public awareness of the
importance of the provinces forest resource as a key in ensuring a
sustainable and viable forest industry.
The fair includes a variety of interactive displays
and demonstrations for the entire family, including a science corner and
wildlife display for children. Instructional workshops include chainsaw
and ATV safety, as well as mapping and global positioning systems (GPS).
Forest harvesting equipment and firefighting equipment will be on
display and children can meet Smokey the Bear and Marti the Pine Marten.
"We had a fantastic turnout and response to last
years fair and we look forward to seeing all the school children and
their parents again this year," said Minister Dunderdale. "This event
has something for everyone from scientific displays to equipment
demonstrations. Our goal is to increase public awareness in the return
we get from a healthy forest industry, which includes innovative forest
products, interesting careers, viable commercial opportunities and
valuable recreational releases."
The two-day event runs at the Pepsi Studio in Corner
Brook from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
