The Provincial Government has officially issued a call
for Expressions of Interest for the commercial development of the timber
resource in central Newfoundland and the establishment of a timber
processing industry.
"This is an important step in determining the level of
interest and potential economic development opportunities that exist in
relation to the timber resource in the region," said the Honourable
Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible
for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "This call will ensure that all
those with an interest in developing the resource have an opportunity to
bring their ideas forward."
All Expressions of Interest must provide a detailed
conceptual development plan that outlines objectives, priorities and
timelines for implementation of the proposed project. The Terms of
Reference are now available at www.gov.nl.ca/nr/. The deadline for
submissions is May 22, 2009.
"We now have a significant portion of the central
Newfoundland fibre resource available for new innovative economic
development opportunities," said Minister Dunderdale. "We are seeking a
proponent who has a viable development plan and vision that will assist
in the return of a strong and sustainable forest industry in the
region."
The Provincial Government announced its intention to
seek Expressions of Interest for the former AbitibiBowater fibre on
March 24. At that time, the province confirmed that no new wood
allocations would be issued until a proper scan of potential
opportunities was completed.
"This approach will ensure the allocation of the
available fibre is done in a comprehensive, logical way that provides
the best economic return for the people of the region," said Minister
Dunderdale.
